How to Choose and Order Custom Furniture

Are you tired of sifting through furniture magazines, seeing pieces that just don’t fit your style? There’s a solution--custom made furniture. From planning and measuring to dreaming and designing, we’ve put together some helpful tips and tricks on choosing the right style and finding the right help to make your furniture dreams come true.

At Omorfia, we want to bring beauty into every home. A piece of custom furniture is an excellent way to do this. If you want help figuring out where to purchase a custom piece, or how to decide what style, call us.

Why Custom Furniture?

Unlike with readymade pieces, custom-made furniture opens up a slew of options for you to choose from. There is a much wider variety of fabrics, wood, and metal materials to choose from when you’re having something made for you.

Do you have a small, large, or oddly shaped room? At Omorfia Designs Inc., we love having the freedom to adapt furniture to your room rather than the other way around to help transform those spaces from eyesores to design oases.

Custom furniture also allows you to adjust table heights, couch depths, and more for your comfort. Most importantly, when you can make such specific choices, you can be sure your furniture will reflect your personal style. And who doesn’t want that?

Planning for Your Order

The first step in the custom furniture ordering process is deciding how many pieces you’re looking to have made. Whether you want to redecorate an entire room with custom furniture or add a table or sofa to your existing collection, determining the number of pieces will help you in setting your budget and timeline.

Custom furniture pieces can come with higher price tags, but when done right they make your space a one-of-a-kind reflection of your style. It’s important to know how much you want to spend and have that amount in mind as you discuss choices of wood, fabrics, hardware, and so forth with your designer. If you’re trying to keep a tight rein on your spending, we can help you choose from lower-cost alternatives that still give your furniture a great finished look.

Because custom furniture is made for you from scratch, keep in mind as you plan that it will take longer to get the piece(s) to you. From designing to making to having it set up in your home can take as long as 6-10 weeks. Though the timeline is sometimes shorter, depending on the number of pieces you’re having made.

What do you like? What don’t you?

It may seem like a no-brainer to answer what you like or don’t like when you see a piece of furniture. We know, though, that it’s important to be on the same page as your family or housemates before making any decisions on designing your custom piece(s). It’s easy to see a readymade couch and know that you don’t like it, but it’s altogether more challenging to come up with a couch design from scratch that you know you’ll love for years to come.

Try asking yourself the following types of questions to get the juices flowing:

  • Do I like dark or light woods?

  • Do I want curved or simple lines?

  • Do I like floral or geometric patterns? Or no patterns at all?

If you see fabrics you like in pictures but aren’t sure about what they’ll be like in person, Black Swan Inc. recommends getting a fabric swatch before deciding. You can touch it, put it in the room to see how lighting changes it, and consider whether or not there will be lots of sunshine that might fade it over time.

Another way to help you decipher which designs, patterns, and materials best fit your style tastes is to look at pictures for inspiration. You can look at furniture or home design magazines or go online and search the web.

Keep in mind that these pictures are merely for inspiration. For a custom piece, a designer will want to make a unique item just for you--which is the whole point and excitement about getting a custom made furniture piece!

Choosing a Design Style

A great way to bring all your ideas and aesthetics together and coordinate them with your existing design elements and furniture is to select an overarching design style. If you find clean lines and simple pieces is your go-to a Modern style is for you. If you like sturdy metal tables and unfinished wood, an Industrial style is what you want.

If you’re not sure what style you want, Relish suggests choosing the central pieces first and working from there. Choose the table for your dining room, the couch for your living room, or the bed frame for your bedroom. Having these central pieces chosen will help set the style for the whole space.

Always keep in mind that your custom furniture is made to withstand the tests of time. So steer away from things that are “hip” right now and look for timeless pieces that you know you’ll still enjoy in the years to come. And remember, you can always change up accents (i.e., pillows, table runners, etc.) to freshen up your sofas and tables.

Measurements and Room Layout

Be sure you know the dimensions of the room you’re hoping to add your furniture to including ceiling height. Take into consideration any existing furniture pieces you’re keeping, and plan for walkways, accent tables, lamps, and outlet placement when taking measurements.

Be sure you consider the overall size of the room when choosing what kinds of pieces you want in your space. An overstuffed couch in a smaller office will only shrink the room further. Consider a wood bench seat or recliner chair as alternatives.

Choosing the Right Designer

Ordering custom furniture takes time, thorough planning, and requires you to be accurate on measurements, materials, and styles. With so many steps and decisions, it’s essential to have the right designer to work with you to help you through the process from design, to construction, to setting your new pieces in place at your home.
